TOKYO, Japan - The Japanese e-bike market is experiencing one of the perhaps largest product recalls. On 15th May Yamaha, founder and producer of the so-called „PAS“ pedelec system, and two competitors using PAS for their pedelec range, recalled a total of 221,358 models (!) produced between January 2001 and February 2003.
The recall of 128,982 Yamaha-branded, 79,559 Bridgestone- and 12,817 Miyata-branded pedelecs has been decided after seven reported accidents between January 2005 and April 2007. According to Yamaha a PAS sensor giving input and pedelec power to the riders’ pedalling might not work as it should work
All mentioned units were sold in Japan only. Japan is still the second-largest e-bike market in the world (behind China). National newspapers were reporting about this huge pedelec recall. It also forced Yamaha’s PAS division to a last minute cancellation of an appointment with Bike Europe in Japan. (JB)
