AMSTERDAM, the Netherlands – The Dutch bike market shows a 10% growth during the first half of 2007. Pedelecs and E-bike in particular are in demand. Their market share has gone up from 3% in 2006 to 5% in 2007. For the whole of 2007 dealer and industry associations BOVAG and RAI expect to double the sales of pedelecs and E-bikes compared to 2006.
The fast growing popularity of this bike category is for both association reason to urge the government for a stretched tax exemption. The Dutch tax system has a special ruling for employees using their bikes for commuter traffic. When buying a new bike they can deduct a maximum of € 749 on their income before taxation.
BOVAG and RAI Vereniging want to increase the maximum amount to € 2,000 due to the higher average sales price of E-bikes and with that making E-bikes also financially more attractive for commuter traffic.
“We urge the Dutch Government to review the current tax ruling for bikes as it is not sufficient for the more expensive E-bikes” says BOVAG General Manager Koos Burgman.
