ROME, Italy – The Italian capital is to become the latest European city to set up a self-service bike rental programme. Rome has hired Spanish infrastructure group FCC to set up the system, the company announced last Tuesday.

The pilot programme, with an initial length of six months, will include 250 bicycles and 22 stations in the historic centre of Rome. Later it will be extended throughout the city and the target is to install 20,000 rental bikes.

“This experimental bike-sharing programme will make travelling in the centre of Rome easier, faster, economical and environmentally sound,” said the mayor of Rome Walter Veltroni. Rome follows the French capital Paris, which in July launched a network of self-service bicycles. Paris has planned to have 20,600 bikes available by the end of the year.

FCC did not provide financial details of the programme. Similar schemes are also running in Barcelona, Amsterdam and Lyon.
