AXA and ABUS Bike Locks Easy to Open

AMSTERDAM, the Netherlands - Dutch bike thieves have found out that specific types of AXA and ABUS locks are easy to crack without damaging the bike. This was recently discovered by the Dutch police. The lock producers involved have been informed about the new method.

AXA is embarrassed about the case as approximately one million bikes with the AXA locks involved are currently used in the Netherlands. “We want to stress only older types of locks are easy to open”, says AXA-Stenman’s spokesman Dirk Bolderman. Bike thieves continuously find new ways to crack locks and we permanently stay ahead with new development and product innovations.”

The Dutch certification organisation for bike locks, the Stichting ART has confirmed the new method of working used by the bike thieves.

To compensate the consumers AXA has started a discount campaign in which consumers can buy an additional lock with 50% discount. This campaign will be advertised in the national newspapers.

The locks involved are:
ABUS - type 48 KR
ABUS - type Protecta 48 KR
ABUS - type Protecta 4800 KR
AXA - type 583
AXA - type SL7
AXA - type SL9
