AALSMEER, the Netherlands – E-Bike sales skyrocketed in Holland last year. And with that also the turnover made with these bikes, which is already as big as the total amount made with Mountainbikes, Trekking and Kids-bikes together.
According to the Dutch dealer organisation BOVAG, the sales total for the first half of the year already surpassed the number for the whole of 2006. From July to December the market continued to boom.
IBD Sales 80%
The number of units sold in 2007 totalled at 115,000 E-Bikes; well above the 75,000 expected in the beginning of 2007. E-Bikes are mainly sold (some 80%) by IBD’s; the same as for all other bike sales in the Netherlands.
For 2008 BOVAG expects some 150,000 e-Bikes to be sold in the Netherlands for an average retail price (at IBD’s) of about € 1,900. Despite all the good news, BOVAG is also warning its members to keep an eye on developments in China where E-Bikes are sold for average retail prices of about € 200. According to BOVAG, these Chinese e-Bikes can easily meet EU regulations and put on the market far below the regular prices.
