Trek Recalls 49,000 Bikes Worldwide

WATERLOO, US – Trek Bicycle announces a worldwide voluntary recall of the Trek MT220 girls bicycle because of possible frame failure. 13 reports of broken frames in the US, causing four minor injuries have prompted this very costly recall.

At least 49,000 units have been sold from April 2004 until June 2007 worldwide. All frames have been made in China and Taiwan.

European Market Will Be Informed Monday

The official announcement of this recall has been made by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission yesterday. The European market, dealers and consumers, will be informed next Monday.

This recall involves Trek girls’ bicycles model MT220 and model years 2005 (light metallic blue), 2006 (metallic silver and metallic purple or pink and pearl white), and 2007 (pink and white pearl or metallic purple). The model name is printed on the frame of the bicycle. Model year 2008 bicycles are not included in this recall.

The US Consumers are recommended to return the bike to a Trek dealer for a free replacement MT220 girl’s bicycle or a US $100 discount on a different size Trek bicycle. Looking at the 49,000 bikes involved, this could result in a multi-million affair for the US bike maker.
