EU Environment Commissioner to Visit Cycling Event

GENT, Belgium – Next week’s presentation of bikes and pedelecs on the doorstep of the European Commission, will be visited by Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas. The event is organized by the European Two-Wheelers Retailers’ Association (ETRA) in the framework of the Green Week. On Wednesday June 4th, ETRA president Nigel Hill will welcome the EU Commissioner.

Commissioner Dimas will visit the test-track laid out on the esplanade of the Berlaymont building, which is the very heart of Brussels’ European area. Together with European Cyclits Federation (ECF) secretary General Bernhard Ensink, Nigel Hill will present a Velo-city bike to Stavros Dimas.

Contribution to greening the transport

This bicycle is a symbolic invitation to Velo-city 2009, which takes place in Brussels as well as a small contribution to greening the transport generated by the European Commission.

ETRA strongly believes in the environmental potential of cycling. Therefore, the trade association is organising a presentation of bikes and pedelecs combined with a test-track. The event is precisely aimed at making European decision-makers aware of what the bicycle can do for their policies.

On Wednesday 4th and Thursday 5th of June, the esplanade of the Berlaymont building, will be occupied by bikes and pedelecs. On these 600 square meter Extra Energy will build a test-track.

Batavus, Flyer, Gazelle, Giant, Koga, Schwinn and Sparta will present pedelecs, folding bikes, cargo bikes, city bikes equipped with innovative components, etc. Furthermore, Stuttgart’s brand-new electric bike leasing scheme will also be demonstrated in this Green Week event. There will be a charger station and a battery vending machine on display in Brussels.
