BERN, Switzerland – After 143 new shops entered into the world’s largest retail organization in 2007, Intersport International Corp. (IIC) currently has a roll of well over 5,000 stores (5,049 to be precise) in 35 countries.
As the company and its member retailers were hit hard by the mild winter of 2007 and the lack of snow, turnover only increased by 2% but reached a new record of € 8.54 billion after VAT last year.
Cycling was, next to running, walking and football, one of the segments that scored higher sales at the retailers affiliated with Intersports’ national licensees, making up for a drop in sales of winter sports products.
Strong sales in Eastern Europe, Croatia and Greece also contributed in offseting the drop in winter sports turnover. In Russia, Serbia and Bulgaria the Intersport members and national licensees had a harder time in 2007. According to Intersport, the European sporting goods retail market grew by around 1% last year to € 37.5 billion in spite of the bad winter weather. The world’s largest retail organization claims a 19% market share.
