APELDOORN, The Netherlands – The Dutch pedelec market continues to boom. In 2007 sales doubled and for this year it looks like the same is happening. Market leader by far in Holland is Sparta with its very successful ION which is also the best selling pedelec is Europe.
That popular e-Bike is just after the start of the summer season already sold out. Next deliveries are expected to be available in August of September. “Again we are having a double digit growth in sales this year”, says Sparta MD Huub Snellen, “and it is expected to continue in 2009”. Bike Europe estimates that some 75,000 Sparta ION’s have already been sold this year.
Much higher prices
According to Snellen, the number of pedelecs sold in the Netherlands is currently growing so fast that it is cannibalizing on the sale of regular bikes. This trend already started last year. As a result the overall sale of bikes is slowing down. However, as pedelecs are sold at much higher prices compared to regular bicycles, the turnover at dealers is increasing also with double digit percentages.
