BRUSSELS, Belgium – During last week’s OEM mini trade shows in Taiwan it was said that the CEN standards for bicycles have been revised in such way that several standards have been strengthened, like load-tests for handlebars. Asked whether this is true, Chairman Siegfried Neuberger (photo) of the CEN Technical Committee 333 said:

“No. There are no new standards and there’s no revision of the CEN standards. The earliest time for such a revision is five years after they were published as EN standards.”

That publication as EN standards for most of them took place in the year 2006. So, in 2011 the CEN standards for bicycles, parts and accessories could be updated. Up to now the following six different CEN standards were published:

  • EN 14764 for City and Trekking bicycles
  • EN 14765 for bicycles for young children
  • EN 14766 for Mountain bicycles
  • EN 14781 for Racing bicycles
  • EN 14872 for Bicycles – Accessories for bicycles – Luggage carrier
  • EN 15496 for Cycle Locks

The new safety standard EN 15194 for EPACs, Electrically Power Assisted Cycles will be published as EN standard early 2009.

CEN TC333 Chairman Neuberger further stipulated in his answer on the question of the revised CEN standards: “We have created an ‘Interpretation Panel’ (IP) in CEN TC 333 to discuss and to decide on questions and problems with the standards. The decisions made by this Interpretation Panel will be highlighted in technical reports which are to be published. If for example a test facility has a problem with the understanding of a test method, the IP will discuss this problem and try to find a solution. The result will be published in a technical report.”
