Merida Recalls Folding Bikes
TAIPEI, Taiwan – Last week Merida issued a voluntary recall of the first generation of the Freeway CT03 and R3.0. Merida has asked consumers to take their folding bicycles back to Merida stores to replace a problematic safety device.
“We launched a patented safety folding button between June and July 2008 and used the device on those advanced types of bikes”, said Chan Fu-chi, a Merida domestic marketing manager.
“The device can be damaged easily when the users try to unlock the button with force”, Chan said, noting that the company improved the device before they kicked off a recall of 1,800 bikes of those types it had sold for a safety check.
Until now Merida has notified 1,560 buyers for the replacement, but has been unable to contact the rest because they did not leave their personal information when they purchased their bike.
