TAIPEI, Taiwan – King Liu, the chairman and a co-founder of Giant, will set off on a cycle ride from Beijing to Shanghai on May 9. Making the announcement last week at the opening of the 2009 Taipei Int’l Cycle Show, the 75-year-old King Liu said he expects to complete the 1,688 kilometre trip in 20 days.
“I am prepared,” said the business leader who wore cycling gear in his first appearance at the trade show and displayed a limited edition carbon-fiber road bicycle designed by him.
Liu admitted, however, that at the age of 75, it will be difficult to ride the 80 km a day required to complete the journey in the allotted time, even though he completed a 927-km ride around Taiwan in 17 days in 2007.
He expressed hope that the personal challenge will also help promote friendship and cycling exchanges between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.
