TAICHUNG, Taiwan – Last week voluntary recalls were announced in the United States for Trek and Cannondale bikes fitted with uni-crown head shock suspension forks manufactured by JD Components in China. Trek bikes with the malfunctioning forks are also sold in Europe. On questions about this recall JD Components said to Bike Europe that the matter is completely under control and has (for the most part) been completely resolved already.

The recall was announced by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission in cooperation with Trek and Cannondale. For Trek the recall involves model year 2009 Trek 7300, 7300WSD, and 7500 bicycles. For Cannondale model year 2008 models Adventure 2, Adventure 3, Adventure 2 Feminine and Adventure 3 Feminine. It is not yet clear whether the Cannondale bikes haven also been sold in Europe.

The recalled uni-crown head shock suspension forks can lose alignment causing the front wheel to turn unexpectedly and can cause the rider to lose control of the bicycle and crash. In the US there have been four reports of misaligned forks while no injuries have been reported. So far no reports on faulty forks have been recorded in Europe.

Nevertheless JD Components as well as Trek are taking this matter very serious. A JD spokesman said to Bike Europe: “Both Trek and JD have taken extraordinary steps to fix just about every fork in both the US and European markets. JD has furthermore organized ‘flying doctor’ teams which have visited most of the clients worldwide that have purchased the suspension forks.”

Next to that all the European customers of the bike component maker haven been informed on the matter by letter. In this letter it is said: “Through a very concentrated effort and action these past weeks we have now almost completed all of the necessary modifications, and have received no further reports of problems or malfunctions. The production, quality and capacity of our products in our factories are going exceptionally smoothly and are well controlled. All of the necessary reworking of the revised forks was completed in March and April.”
