BARCELONA, Spain – Barcelona’s Bicing public bike hire scheme is a huge success. After its launch two years ago the forecasts said that in three years it should reach 85,000 subscribers. In fact after two years 186,000 frequent users have registered which correlates to a big percentage of the total Barcelona population;
15% of the city’s adult population is using the Bicing bikes frequently and on a subscription basis! During winter time 35,000 trips are made each day, which rises to 58,000 trips in summer.
Bicing by now numbers 400 stations with 6,000 bicycles overall. Each bicycle is used approximately ten times each during the summer months and on busy locations up to 20 times per day.
On average per day the Bicing bikes cover a distance of 25 kilometres. It’s remarkable that ‘standard’ rental bikes are used more often as well. That market was expected to decline. The Bicing project generates employment for about 200 people. According to some mobility studies 30% of the people use the Bicing bikes in combination with public transport.
