CHICAGO, USA – 2009 has been a challenging year for the US component manufacturer SRAM. CEO Stan Day (photo), “We launched several new products in the middle of the peak of the economic downturn while the recession was seriously affecting our sales, especially our OEM business.”

In an interview with US trade magazine Bicycle Retailer & Industry News Stan Day states further that global bicycle production has been cut more than retail sales. After the financial crash in September 2008 bicycle manufacturers rushed to reduce production but the pipelines were still filled up until January this year. As a result inventory levels were high at the opening of the season this year.

As OEM business is clearly down for SRAM this year, Stan Day also stated in the interview that dealer sales have fallen by only 5 to 10% as their business was less affected. For next year Stan Day expects a growth in sales again as the inventory levels at OEM’s have been minimized while retail sales of bicycles has been better than expected in general.
