SHANGHAI, China - A leading role for the e-Bike at the World Expo 2010 when Swedish Trade Minister Ewa Björling presented an Eagle to design student Wenchao Gao as one of the award prizes at the country’s design competition. The Eagle was handed over during the World Expo 2010 opening ceremonies on Saturday at the Swedish pavilion in Shanghai, China.

Drawing on inspiration from the Swedish pavilion’s “Spirit of Innovation” theme, Swedish organizers teamed up with Tongji University to run the Expo design competition. A total of one hundred Chinese design students had participated in the competition. The students who participated in the contest were asked to create products that are innovative, based on sustainable materials and useful in everyday life.

The four finalists and their creations were presented at the Expo opening event. Gao was honoured for her unique western knife and fork set with built-in chopsticks. The Eagle E-Bike energized by TranzX PST, itself a winner of multiple design awards in the bicycle industry, was presented by the Swedish Trade Minister together with Annika Rembe, Commissioner General for Sweden’s World Expo 2010 Committee, and Per Engdahl, Asia President of Höganäs. Swedish company Höganäs had partnered with the JD Group, creator and manufacturer of the Eagle, to offer two of the innovative E-Bikes as prizes for Sweden’s Expo design competition.

The Eagle had been equipped with new generation of electric motors developed by the Swedish company Höganäs. According to Höganäs the motor is made of metal powder, which enables a unique combination of low cost, low weight and high performance.

This autumn Höganäs will market this motor concept towards end users in various suitable application segments starting with the bicycle industry particularly in China and other Asian markets. Höganäs intends to license and subcontract the production of the motors.
