STUTTGART, Germany – That one of the biggest in car components is about to enter the e-Bike market is already for some time a well-known fact. However, with that speculations were also rising with what Bosch will come up with at Eurobike 2010.

With today’s announcement of its development partnership with Cannondale, Bosch also revealed more about the e-Bike system it is working on. As is shown on the homepage of www.bosch-ebike.de; it’s a bracketdrive that stands out in particular by its advanced sensor-system.

Partnership Cannondale

The today announced Bosch & Cannondale development partnership says that: “Bosch is entering the bicycle industry with a new high performance electric drive for eBikes.” That drive system brings, according to Bosch: “Outstanding drive performance provided by the strong motor and the favourably low vehicle center of gravity.”

Bosch developed a modular e-Bike powertrain system with which: “Bicycle manufacturers receive new capabilities for profiling. For example, the low space requirements of the system components provide layout freedom for both the design and the position of the battery pack,” says the electronics giant. That battery pack consists of a Lithium-Ion, 288 Wh, 36V, 8Ah battery with integrated cell protection that weighs 2.3 kgs.

The company further claims: “A decisive feature for a positive riding experience with e-Bikes is the situationally correct detection of the rider's desire for motor support while pedalling. In the Bosch drive, this task is handled by three sensors for pedalling force, pedalling frequency, and speed of travel. Depending on the sensor data, the integrated controller calculates the force with which the electric motor will ‘help pedalling’. The level of support can be customized by selecting one of up to four driving programs. The result is highest efficiency in the implementation of the rider’s wishes and the ideal range in every circumstance.”

Today’s press release also states: “Bosch is entering the bicycle industry with the declared goal to take a leading position in this market as an engine for innovation. Cannondale, leading brand of Cycling Sports Group (CSG), part of Dorel Industries is the partner in system development for the first generation.” More details on the partnership are not disclosed in today’s statement. Also nobody at Bosch was available for an answer on the question whether this partnership results in Bosch exclusively supplying Cannondale for MY 2011 – 2012 e-Bikes.
