CHICAGO, Ill. USA (1 May) - SRAM is moving the production of RockShox suspension parts to Taiwan. Before SRAM bought RockShox, the suspension makers were moving from California to Colorado. But the best brand name in bicycle suspension in the world could be bought by SRAM because the RockShox company was not financially sound. SRAM now takes drastic measures: production will be moved to Taiwan for the 2004 model year, and the R&D department will remain in Colorado (where mountains are at hand.)
Perhaps the most informative -and surprising- information from the SRAM press release are SRAM's figures about the suspension market: RockShox' customer base is now largely in Europe and Asia, the segment mountainbikes have in these markets is down to an average 40% and (OEM) prices for suspension products have declined by more than 50% during the past 36 months.
