BRUSSELS, Belgium – During the last five years the export of bicycles from China to Europe dropped from 2.4 million units in 2004 to only 481,607 last year. China has become a less significant bike supplier for the European markets.

Next to that, China is no longer the cheapest as the average price of Chinese made bikes rose to € 71.44 in 2009. Bikes imported from the Philippines, Tunisia or from Bangladesh were much cheaper last year.

Currently one of the major topics in the global bike sector is the 48.5% anti-dumping duty on bikes and parts exported from China to Europe. It will expire July 15, 2010. The latest Eurostat figures raise the following question; can the European bike industry (again) accuse China of dumping bicycles on its markets?

Bike Europe’s May edition (publication date May 28) contains a comprehensive article on China’s bike export to Europe during the 2004 – 2009 period.
