LONDON, UK (20 September 2000) -- Last week, when the gasoline shortage in Europe reached its pinnacle, sales of bicycle inner tubes in the UK rose 18%, according to the UK newspaper The Daily Telegraph. Apparently, with the roads blocked off Britons opened the doors to their sheds and dug out their bicycles only to see that, due to lack of use, the tires were flat. According to The Daily Telegraph report, a Halfords spokesman said that sales of new bicycles were up 36% over last year. The spokesman noted that customers were coming into the store desperate to find another way to get about. (OB)
