LISBON, Portugal (26 September 2000) -- Decathlon plans to open its first store in Portugal at the end of October in the Alfragile shopping mall near Lisbon, according to the industry newsletter Sporting Goods Intelligence. SGI also writes that Decathlon may be negotiating with the Portuguese sporting goods chain Sport Zone, owned by the Sonae retail group, to take over the chain's three Spanish superstores. In the last two years these stores have accrued losses of EUR2.5 million.
In October Decathlon plans to open its 25th superstore in Spain. The 6,000 square meter store will be located in Mahadahonda, near Madrid. (JW)
