TARNOWSKIE GORY, Poland (January 25) - On the industrial estate of Tarnowskie Gory, Poland, a warehouse of Hellmann Moritz International burnt down. The warehouse contained, among others, 5,000 Giant and Merida bicycles. The fire spread very rapidly through the cardboard wrappings of the bicycles. The local fire brigade came down with big material (32 fire engines), and could prevent an adjacent storage of ten thousands of car tires to catch fire. The heat of the burning bicycles has been so intense that firemen had to pluck cloths of molten aluminium from their clothes. The 2,000 Giant bikes were new models, with consumer prices up to 2,500 euros. The specs of the lost Merida bikes are unknown, but both batches were insured. The local police investigates the cause of the fire. (MU)
