PARIS, France - (September 26) Never before was the venue for a bicycle conference so grand…the delegates were received by the Major of Paris Bertrand Delaneo in the beautiful rococo Town Hall. Amid all this splendour the mayor and his deputy, Denis Baupin gave passionate speeches in favour of urban cycling. They also laid out their detailed plans for the future of Paris. The evening reception in those splendid surroundings was a great success and Isabel Lesens, who led the organizing team was showered with well-deserved compliments.
The next day saw a strange happening in the Paris streets; 700 delegates joined by 7000 Parisians toured from the Eiffel tower, down the Champs Elysees on to the Hotel de Ville. Much to the dismay of the motorized traffic… Led by the Deputy Major and most of his staff the column showed the way to a more effective use of Paris' busy streets.(MH)
