LAKE FOREST, US (October 1) - The Brunswick Corporation, former owner of Mongoose and Roadmaster bikes, has been ordered to pay US$ 1 million to settle federal claims. The claims stated that the company had not been timely in reporting claims about injuries sustained. The injuries can be attributed to defects in the front forks of several models made by the company. Being slow in reporting 31 serious incidents involving these forks caused the Consumer Product Safety Commission to lay the claims at Brunswick Co. The forks broke during normal use, causing serious head and face injuries. The company had to recall more than 100,000 bicycles at the time the injuries occurred. The Brunswick Corporation sold its bicycle division in 2001 to Pacific Cycles. (MH)
