SINGAPORE, (October 13th) - Almost 60 years ago the Vespa was invented as basic transport. A means to get war-torn Italy on the move again - the nifty little bike has done just that - and secured its place in design history while at it. From day one the little 'wasp' was more than transport, it's a fashion statement and a life style. Now in 2003 the Vespa-bug gets a hold on the streets of Singapore. To be 'in' a vintage -Vespa is almost needed. Apart from offering an economic and fast mode of transport, the bike is seen as an extension of the riders' personality. Customizing your Vespa is almost as important as owning one, which harks back to the days of the English 'Mods' in the 60's. (MH) source: Straits Times
