China New Growth Market for Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan – In 2011 bicycle exports from Taiwan to China increased by 145% although the volumes are still small. The bicycle industry in Taiwan directly benefits from the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) as it simplifies the trading between the two countries.

According to the latest statistics of Taiwan Bicycle Exporters’ Association (TBEA) Taiwan in 2011 exported 38,162 bicycles to China, up 145% from the previous year, together with euro 41.6 million in bicycle parts, up 98.7%.

Thanks to the increasing exports of Taiwan-made bicycles and parts to China, the TBEA recently expressed an optimistic outlook for 2012.

“The US bicycle market is expected to remain stable or grow modestly, with Europe to be uncertain due to the debt issues. Stronger demand growth would be seen in mainly China and emerging markets”, said Anthony Lo, TBEA’s chairman and Giant’s president. “Taiwan’s bicycle industry will not be affected too much by the current business climate.”

In 2011, Taiwan exported 437,640 bikes worldwide, down 13.68% from the previous year, generating export value of over euro 1.3 billion, up 10.7%. More on the export of the Taiwan bicycle industry in Bike Europe’s next issue; the Jan/Feb edition.
