PARIS, France (January 16) - Carrefour saw its net sales shrink 1.6% to € 76,777mn for its fiscal year 2002, compared with € 78,037mn in 2001. Sales in America dropped with 37% to € 6,346mn, with the major losses in South America's bankrupt economies in Argentina and Brazil. Sales in Europe rose 6.9% to € 26,267mn and sales in France rose 1.8% to € 39,147mn. France contributed 51% and the rest of Europe 34.2% to Carrefour's turnover total in 2002. In its 4th quarter of 2002 Carrefour's group sales netted 1.7% less to € 20,897mn. But fourth quarter sales in the Americas tumbled -43.2% to € 1,460mn, while sales in France rose 2.8% to € 10,706mn and 7.0% to € 7,475mn in the rest of Europe.
Over the year, Carrefour opened 41 new hypermarkets, 43 supermarkets and 228 hard discount stores. In total the French retail giant now operates no less than 5,532 stores, of which 1,338 in France and 3,373 in Europe outside France.(FN)
