SHANGAI, China - To stipulate how environmental friendly a bicycle is as a means of transportation in cities, the theme of the 2011 China Cycle Show was ‘low carbon travelling’. It turned to be very appropriate as the 4-day show was completely covered in smog this year. The China International Bicycle & Motor Fair, which took place in Shanghai last May 4 to 7 saw probably the largest edition in its history covering 120,000 square meters of exhibition space with 1,200 vendors in 5,300 booths.

Besides mainland China, exhibitors came from 18 countries and regions such as Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, France, Germany, UK, USA, Canada, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, India, Spain, Portugal, Pakistan, Hong Kong SAR and Taiwan. Among them, India and Taiwan participated as group pavilions.
This year’s China Cycle saw a growing number of Asian distribution companies, representing leading European and US brands. On past editions of the show, these brands were presenting themselves at their own booths but having found local partners they leave the business to them. Only well known names like Shimano, SRAM, Bianchi, Cratoni and BH, just to name a few, had their own representation.
The rapidly growing Chinese bike market makes it most attractive for many European and American companies. Once a good distributor is found growth rates of 30-40% annually are common on this market which is very sensitive for A-brands. More on the China Cycle 2011 in the next May issue of Bike Europe.
