BARCELONA, Spain (18 January) - Derbi and Piaggio have just agreed to a collaboration in which the Spanish brand will provide the Italian manufacturer with 50 cc gearbox engines to fit the future range Gilera motorbikes. In the same way, Derbi will now be able to launch a new range of scooters equipped with four-stroke engines from Piaggio. This technological exchange ends economic differences the two companies had since they began a relationship in 1997. Rumors of a possible coalition between both companies, were raised in the last few weeks, by the speculated interest of Deutsche Bank, (majority shareholder of the Piaggio Group), in acquiring Derbi (owned by the investment group Mercapital, majority shareholder of the Spanish brand). Derbi holds second place in the Spanish market of 50 cc gearbox mopeds, with 58.007 units sold in the year 2000. The number one position in the Spanish ranking of 50 cc, is held by the Piaggio-Vespa-Gilera group that sold 80,296 units during last year. (JCO)
