AMSTERDAM, the Netherlands – Is it a first sign of bike sales recovering throughout Europe? Fact is that in trendsetting Holland sales is picking up again. After a long series of months with a total number of new bicycles down on the same period of 2009; in October 2010 the total number of bikes sold in Holland was up 9%.
Apart from the sale of electric bikes, the Dutch market was down this year. And not by a bit! The number of bikes sold in months like February or even May 2010 (normally one of the best selling months) dropped by double digit percentages. But finally recovered in October.
In October 2010 total turnover in bikes grew with 12%. This percentage stands for the total trade in bicycles. According to GfK Benelux (commissioned by industry association RAI and dealer association BOVAG), dealers performed even better. Their turnover upped 13% compared to the same period in 2009.
In the first ten months of 2010 the total number of e-Bikes sold in the Netherlands stood at 149,200; up 8.7% on the 137,300 that were sold in the same period of 2009.
