CHENNAI, India – Tamil Party President Karunanidhi today questioned the 'hastiness' in which T I Cycles of Chennai was awarded the tender to supply cycles under the free bicycle scheme for students, by amending the rules of Sales Tax department.
In a statement here, he said four cycle companies - Hero, Avon, Atlas and T I - had quoted the same rates for bicycles in the their tenders.
But the government amended the rules to favour T I Cycles, he charged and wanted to know why it was done.
He said the Managing Director of the Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing Corporation had opposed the amendment, but his opposition was not considered as the official was on deputation from Punjab cadre to Tamil Nadu cadre.
He alleged 'kickbacks' in the deal and wanted the government to clear the doubts among the people on the matter.
