Milestone at Sparta: e-Bike Nr. 400,000 Leaves Factory

APELDOORN, the Netherlands – This week, Dutch Sparta reached a milestone in its history; the 400,000st e-bike was assembled at the Apeldoorn factory. The company headed by Huub Snellen (photo) unlocked the market for electric bicycles with its Sparta ION drive system in 2003 after it presented its first e-bike in 1998.

Thanks to the Sparta ION drive system electric bikes are nowadays widely accepted by the Dutch public and have become a common sight on the streets and bike paths of the country. Currently e-bikes are also of vital importance for the success and future of the specialist bike trade in the Netherlands.

With the advent of the Sparta ION the development of the e-bike market accelerated. Year after year the demand for electric bikes turned out to be bigger than the most optimistic estimate. This created an e-bike market in the Netherlands that nowadays accounts for over 200 different models.

Currently, about 8 years after Sparta unlocked this new market, sales of the ION e-bikes continue to grow. According to the latest Gfk market research figures Sparta’s e-bike sales were up 23% last April compared to the same month one year earlier. With that the company extended its leading market position.
