MILAN, Italy - The office of EU trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson has informed the Italian government not to renew restrictions on Chinese textile imports imposed in 2005. There should be no leeway for an agreement with China to prolong the restrictions, and quotas on imports will be removed January 1st 2008.
The letter to the Italian government said the EU commission will, however, propose to set up with China a system to monitor imports. Britain, the Netherlands, Sweden and Germany support the phase-out of the quotas.
Textile-producing nations Italy, France and Spain had asked the commission to maintain import restrictions for at least another year.
