ZURICH – Switzerland – Big news from Switzerland: Butch Gaudy (photo), renowned mountainbike pioneer as well as founder and driving force of the Swiss cult brand MTB Cycletech is no longer involved what he created.
Butch Gaudy brought the mountain bike to Europe already in 1981. His brand MTB Cycletech has long been considered as cult label, which like no other brand is identified with the master behinhd it: Butch Gaudy.
The brand was not owned by its creator. Ten years ago, as Gaudy was looking for a distributor, he joined the company Velobaze to which he sold the trademark for an annual license fee. He remained brand and product manager. Velobaze owner George Merahtzakis differed with his business-oriented nature considerably from Gaudy, the creator - what for long time yet seemed to be a useful addition.
Last year it became clear that the chemistry was definitely not right anymore. Differences seemed to be about strategic issues like the international distribution of the revolutionary GreenWheel for e-bike. However, there seem to be also financial issues. Maybe it can all still be solved as reports are coming in that the two rivals will discuss on a form of cooperation.
