BRUSSELS, Belgium – Prior to last week’s meeting of the anti-dumping committee, consisting of members of the 27 states of the European Union, a remarkable development took place in the procedure. The voting itself was of course about what’s to happen with regards to the import of bicycles from the Peoples Republic of China.

Chairman Brian Montgomery (photo) of the European Bicycle Manufacturers’ Association told Bike Europe: “What we hear from various sources is that our hard lobbying seems to be paying off. Officially we can’t comment on the voting in fact we are not supposed to know that there was a meeting.

“But what in particular pleases us is that ever since the publication of the General Disclosure Document in which a 3 year term was mentioned we pleaded for a 5 year term,” says Montgomery. “It appears as the 5 year term was proposed by the European Commission to the anti-dumping committee.”

“And it pleases us even more that a big majority of the committee members were in favour of another five year term of dumping duties. So as it stands now the proposition will be taken to the next stage. At this next stage another look will be taken at the case, but it is unlikely that there will be any changes with such a majority.”

EBMA Chairman Montgomery continued: “So, the waiting is now for the publication in the Official Journal of the European Union which is to take place in October. Once it is published that there is another term of 5 years of 48.5% anti-dumping duties on the import of bicycles made in China, I will be a happy man as it seems that our lobbying efforts are paying off.”
