TAICHUNG, Taiwan - SRAM has built a new factory for carbon parts and components that is next to the existing Truvativ factory in Taiwan. SRAM is using carbon in products of all four brands (SRAM, Rock Shox, Truvativ, Avid) and is currently highly dependable on suppliers.
There are just a few hi-end carbon parts manufactures in Taiwan and China; the factory that works for SRAM is working for a number of brands and is always overbooked, non-flexible and has long delivery times. The other problem is that the same technology is sold to everybody and products from different brands can be very similar or even the same.
With the new 5000 m² large production facility, SRAM plans to develop and produce their own carbon components. First products from the new plant are ultra-light carbon levers for the new '07 brake Avid Juicy Ultimate XC disc brake and new line of carbon cranks called Noir.
We can definitely expect more carbon products from SRAMs brands like seatposts, handlebars, small parts, etc; all made by SRAM.
The R&D department will also use the advantages of a large in-house carbon plant. (GS)
