BRUSSELS, Belgium (30 October) - The Begian minister for consumer affairs recently prohibited the marketing of a bicycle model of the Italian brand All Bike's. The bicycle in question is a 26" mountainbike in grey and black with a grey suspension fork. According to the ministry's decree several heavy accidents have occurred with this model. This is due to a failure in both design and production which can lead to a fracture in which the forks come completely separated from the frame.
The case has been noitified through the European RAPEX-system, ref. 1059/99. RAPEX is an informations systemwhich the member states can use to inform each other and the European Commission about unsafe products.
As far as we know, Belgium is the sole country where the government has taken action in forbidding sales of this bicycle. Italian and French distributors allegedly have decided to withdraw the bicycle themselves. We have tried to reach All Bike's for comment but strangely enough they deny any knowledge of the whole affair. (AR)
