COLOGNE, Germany - The fact in itself is remarkable; that is the fact that Europe’s biggest dealer cooperative, German ZEG, recently issued a press release on the new bike show organized by Messe Munich. It expresses that the ZEG is openly putting its weight behind the new Munich bike show.

In that press release the dealer cooperative makes it abundantly clear what Messe Munich’s objectives are with the new show: it must turn into the biggest and most important bike show. A statement that indicates that Messe Munich as well as the ZEG are planning a full scale attack on Eurobike.

What is also remarkable to note in the ZEG press release on the show called Bike Expo 2009 is that: “The bike sector is thrilled that the Messe Munich with its ultra modern exhibition center and its superb traffic infrastructure, is now offering a new bike show.” Taking the first reactions into account from not only the industry in Germany but also outside ZEG’s home country, this statement looks a bit over the top to say the least.

Happy to be an exhibitor

However, ZEG Chairman Georg Honkomp makes it also clear that he and ZEG are taking part in the new show. In a so-called ’Sector Statement’ he says: “We are very happy to be an exhibitor at the new Bike Expo and will be represented through our ZEG booth with a total floor space of over 3,000 square meters. We are in particular happy that this Show is already taking place in the summer. It enables us to take the reactions from the public into account on our newest models and if necessary adapt them.”

Now that the ZEG is clearly putting its weight behind the new bike show, it will be interesting to see whether it will present a basis for Messe Munich to successfully launch it next July. Show days will be divided in two exclusively for trade visitors (23 and 24 July) and two consumer days (25 and 26 July).

Bike Expo 2009 is planning to be held at 4 halls of the huge new Munich exhibition center. To fill those four halls is quite an ambitious challenge for the organization as the halls in Munich are about twice as big as the ones at Messe Friedrichshafen.
