The Japanese company Sunstar has been a player on the e-Bike market with its own range since 1998 using NimH batteries and the S01 motor. This was later upgraded with Sony 26V/2,5Ah lithium-ion batteries.

In 2007, Sunstar released the prototype of the S02 motor at the Taipei Cycle Show. This new version meets all European specifications, with the new lithium battery offering 5 or 7 Ah. The S02 is scheduled to be delivered to the European market in summer 2009.

The Sunstar motor units are targeted at the aftermarket and small OEMs who want to electrify their existing range of bicycles. The assembly time of the S02 kit has been reduced by 70% compared with the S01. The S02 has a 250 watt motor using specific Sunstar engineering technologies such as a built-in pedalling force sensor and three stage assist mode.
