SYDNEY, Australia (19 May 2000)–The Western Australia-based Orbital Engine
Corporation Ltd. has finalized a technical cooperation and licensing
agreement with Chinese scooter manufacturer China Hainan Sundiro Motorcycle
Co. Ltd. The first scooters are expected to be on the road in late 2000.
Commenting on the deal, Australian Environment Minister Senator Robert Hill
said the Chinese had shown their commitment to reducing pollution by
supporting Orbital’s environmentally-friendly direct fuel injection
technology. “Scooters using this direct fuel injection system produce an 80%
reduction in noxious emissions and reduce fuel consumption by 45%,” he said.
“The fuel consumption improvements directly translate to reductions in the
production of the key greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide.”
The Chinese motorcycle industry produces more than 10 million units
annually. Sundiro built more than 500,000 scooters in 1999. According to
Orbital executive director of business development, Ken Johnson, the new
technology has the potential to have a profound effect on emission levels in
the country’s major cities. (GLS)
