PARIS, France (May 9) – According to the European Bicycle Manufacturers’ Association, the European market for bicycles increased during the past year with slightly less than 4%. Calculated in units the increase numbered 625,000 bikes which presented a total for the fifteen EU memberstates of about 16.5 million bicycles.
The 2000 growth was established by one country only, Germany. According to the EBMA statistics, the consumption of bicycles in Germany increased with a staggering 11.6% or 550,000 bikes to a total number of 5,260,000 bicycles. Next to the consumption of bikes, production also increased slightly in 2000. To be exact with 2.1% or 255,000 units to a total of 12,274,000 units. Production in Germany increased with 3.4% or 110,000 units. Next to Germany also in France the production of bikes increa-sed. 7.4% was the growth rate here and production in France is again reaching the two million barrier. Production in the other EU memberstates showed small increases of decreases. With regard to the imports of bicycles in the EU fifteen memberstates, it is especially striking that powerhouse Taiwan experienced a drop for the second consecutive year. And when we compare the 2000 figures with those from 1998, than it shows that imports from Taiwan decreased significantly. To be exact with over 10%. Total imports increased from 5,314,000 to 5,613,000 units. (JO)
