Using carbon fiber for disc brakes is not possible, as the braking temperatures will melt the disc. To benefit from the low weight and rigidity of carbon, the Taiwanese company Alien Machinery developed a disc with ceramic inlays.

Using carbon fiber for disc brakes is not possible, as the braking temperatures will melt the disc. To benefit from the low weight and rigidity of carbon, the Taiwanese company Alien Machinery developed a disc with ceramic inlays.

When braking, the pads only contact the ceramic inlays which absorb all the heat. The carbon disc made by Alien Machinery weighs only 47g in the 160mm diameter. The disc is also available in 180mm and 203mm diameters. The ceramic used for the inlays is a mixture of general pottery, aluminium oxide, zirconium oxide, and silicon carbide. The standard disc is EN14766 approved, although Alien Machinery advises not to use these disc brakes for downhill riding.
