Giant Takes Fast Lane with Electric Road Models

TAICHUNG, Taiwan – They are not the first as the first electric road racers were on display at Eurobike 2014. But since the industries’ attitude towards such models can best be described as ambivalent. Is Giant changing all this with their launch of two very serious looking Road E models?

Currently Europe’s biggest in so-called ‘e-Performance’ models – Haibike – doesn’t have them in its 2016 line-up. Dozens of e-MTBs and e-Trekking models are there but none in e-Road. Is the move by Giant triggering an avalanche of 2017 electric road racers which are to make their acquaintance at this year’s Eurobike?

Hybrid power

Giant says on its e-Road models, “Take on the fast lane with this lively hybrid powered bike, brought to you by the world’s leading aluminium frame engineers. Road-E combines Giant’s expertise for performance E-power bikes together with its knowledge of performance road bikes.”

SyncDrive Yamaha X94

Giant offers two Road E models simply called 1 and 2. Both have the SyncDrive Yamaha X94 central motor, producing 80Nm of torque. Both also have a 500Wh Lithium Ion battery. The Giant Road E+ 1 is fitted with a mix of 105 and Ultegra transmission components as well as hydro disc brakes. Recommended retail price stands at € 3,899. The Road E+ 2 comes with Shimano Tiagra components and mechanical operated disc brakes for a recommended retail price of € 3,199.
