Sport XX Bike World: Migros Launches Own Bike Stores
GLATTBRUGG, Switzerland – After m-way gained about 15% of the Swiss e-bike market in only 5 years, its parent company Migros has appetite for more: the orange giant is to open its own Velo stores next year, independently of the bike sections in Migros’ own sports stores SportXX.
The proposed name of the Migros stores is Sport XX Bike World. This suggests a close affiliation with SportXX.
The plans for Sport XX Bike World are leaked by several leading brands that are in negotiation for becoming suppliers. Together with skilled staff a number of top brands shall indeed give the new specialist stores the necessary acceptance, something that SportXX as a “miscellaneous store” so far failed in the bike area.
Migros confirmed at the moment only that SportXX “for next year plans a competence upgrading”; more details are expected in the next weeks. Start is planned for next spring with two pilot stores. Unlike m-way such Bike World stores may affect the traditional bicycle and e-bike retailers in Switzerland much harder.
Online Migros is active in the market for conventional bicycles since 2011. At that time the supermarket chain participated in French Probikeshop which next to several EU countries also supplied Switzerland. Migros’ internet shop grew by almost 30 percent last year.
