DT Swiss Adds New Feature to Rims with OXiC Technology
BIEL, Switzerland – To the requirement of the most demanding riders, DT Swiss developed the OXiC technology which gives the wheels ‘several key performance advantages’ as the Swiss wheel builder claims.
OXiC is the name given to a proprietary process in which a durable ceramic coating is electrochemically applied to the rim surface, making it extremely hard and wear resistant. “This process results in a sleek matte black finish and when applied to a brake track, it offers superior and quiet brake performance in all conditions while reducing wear on the rim to the absolute minimum,” said DT Swiss in a press statement.
Difference between anodizing and the OXiC process
The ceramic layer of the OXiC brake surface is applied using a similar method to anodization, by submerging the rim in an electrolyte solution while applying an electrical tension between the rim and the container. The key difference between anodizing and the OXiC process lies in the millions of plasma discharges that occur between the electrolyte solution and the rim, applying extremely high temperatures and pressure on the developing oxide layer.
Applying the OWiC technology on rim has several advantages. According to DT Swiss; “it provide extremely powerful and consistent brake performance in all conditions. The OXIC rim surface is so hard, that the rim will not be affected by wear over the normal lifespan of a wheel. The OXIC coating is able to deform with the rim, maintaining its superior properties even under high mechanical loads.
Environment friendly technology
The OXIC coating process uses no volatile organic compounds or heavy metals, making it a very environment friendly technology. Since the OXIC coating does not contain any inks or dyes it is totally UV stable and won‘t fade or discolor in the sun.
