SUWON, Korea – For a month the Haenggung neighborhood in the city of Suwon in South Korea will be transformed into a car free zone as part of the EcoMobility World Festival next September.

The citizens of Suwon and festival participants will experience an ecomobile lifestyle by favoring walking and cycling. The EcoMobility World Festival is organized by ICLEI and the City government of Suwon, supported by UN-HABITAT. Suwon is located just south of Seoul.

The new urban lifestyle

Instead of getting stuck at Hwaseomun Street a street that is usually congested with illegally parked cars and bottle neck traffic, citizens will be able to walk and enjoy the fresh air that come along with the expanded footpaths and newly planted trees.

“The aim is to show what an eco-mobile city looks like and deliver the message that this new urban life style is possible”, says Suwon mayor Tae-Young Yeom.

Promote vehicles and test products

Konrad Otto Zimmermann, Creative Director of the Festival project, says: “The EcoMobility Festival will be exciting for all: the Suwon citizens will demonstrate healthy and environmentally friendly mobility; the EcoMobility industry can promote their vehicles and test innovative products; city decision makers and urban planners from all over the world will visit Suwon and gain an impression of ‘urban EcoMobility in action'”.

Free transportation to Korea

Manufacturers of bicycles, scooters, tricycles, segways, velo-taxis, cargo bikes, light electric vehicles are invited to join the festival showing the world their latest eco-mobile solution. Companies, who hurry up and get in contact with ICLEI’s Business Liaison within this week, will have a good chance that the City of Suwon pays for transportation costs to South Korea.

In addition, they take over the insurance and guarantee for mounting and assistance. Moreover companies can choose, how their products will be used and presented at the festivals area: In the EcoMobility-exhibition, by daily use of residents, as test vehicles for visitors or everything combined.

The EcoMobility World Festival will take place from September 1 to October 1, 2013.
