Transformation of EU bike market
That there’s a vast interest for this Conference is because here it will be presented where the EU bike market is heading for in the next years. That market transforms due to changing consumer behavior. Today (and tomorrow) Internet browsing consumers want the products of their choice in hours and not in weeks. To meet such consumer demands, lead times for OEM component orders must come down.
The first initiatives to make that transformation happen in the European market, and with that the European industry, are now taking shape. For instance, Portugal is turning into a major production center for Europe, where even Taiwan and other Asian companies are investing in production locations..

How Europe’s biggest bike companies view all this will be pointed out at the Bike Europe Conference. Accell Group and Decathlon will present here their strategies on bringing lead times down. The two company’s combined market annually between 3.5 to 4 million bikes in Europe. With that they account for about 20% of the total European bicycle market that annually accounts for about 20 million bikes sold. With their combined 20% market share their views and strategies count.
Speakers from both Accell Group and Decathlon will dig deep into what conditions need to be in place to achieve the intended result; increasing the speed to market and optimizing supply to demand.
Next to speakers from Accell and Decathlon the program also includes a presentation by Benno Messingschlager, CEO of Messingschlager GmbH & Co. KG. He will address the question whether there are other possibilities for bringing lead times down.
What exactly comes with shortened lead times is one of the issues presented at the Conference by Bike Europe editor-in-chief Jack Oortwijn. His presentation is titled, “The supply chain issue explained.”
Executive panel debate
After the four speakers, an Executive Panel debate will take place. On the basis of theses various captains of industry will discuss for instance whether it is technology-wise possible to switch from production in Asia to Europe.
