Messe Friedrichshafen Presents New B2B Outdoor Show Concept

FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, Germany – Last July 31 the partnership between Messe Friedrichshafen and the European Outdoor Group (EOG), conceptual owner of the European OutDoor trade show, officially ended. This triggered the start of a new show, organized solely by Messe Friedrichshafen, named Outdoor Friedrichshafen. It makes its debut on 17 to 19 September 2019; ten days after Eurobike which takes place 4 to 7 September.

At a recently held press conference at Messe Friedrichshafen the new Outdoor Friedrichshafen B2B show was presented. Before digging deep in the newly developed concept for this show, first a review of what happened. Beginning 2018 EOG members voted on the future location for their OutDoor show. They voted in favour for the “OutDoor by Ispo” concept of Messe Munich. It ended Messe Friedrichshafen’s involvement with EOG’s OutDoor show which for 25 years took place at Friedrichshafen.

‘Now we are association-free’

Exactly that 25 years of OutDoor experience is something Messe Friedrichshafen CEO Klaus Wellmann and his team are now cherishing. He said “Messe Friedrichshafen did not lose an industry, but an association. Now we are association-free. Friedrichshafen is the outdoor marketplace. The environment with its lake and mountains is an authentic location.”

Moreover, Outdoor and Eurobike manager Stefan Reisinger added that members of EOG are in particular the bigger outdoor companies. He said “EOG has over a 100 members. But there have been 950 exhibitors at this year’s 25thOutDoor show in Friedrichshafen.” With that in mind he doubted whether the EOG vote is really representing the opinion of the majority of the outdoor industry.

‘True B2B format’

What Messe Friedrichshafen is planning for the 2019 Outdoor Friedrichshafen show is to focus it in particular on small to medium-sized companies (SMEs) as well as specialty retailers selling innovative high-end products. “Despite the increase in online retail there is no way of avoiding brick-and-mortar retail in the medium term – either in terms of sales, advice or community aspects. Innovative and product-driven brands and manufacturers and independent specialist retailers will continue to represent the backbone of the outdoor industry. With an authentic setting and the right ambience, we offer the real industry players a new, old home“, stated CEO Wellmann.

Compared to the past OutDoor shows the new 2019 Outdoor Friedrichshafen takes place late. On the 17 to 19 Septemberdate Messe Friedrichshafen explained “It’s outside the summer holiday season and at a time of advanced sales – that is the basis for Outdoor Friedrichshafen. Retailers can engage here with all the aspects that relate to their business with a unique level of intensity.”

‘Authentic – practical – forward-looking’

According to show manager Reisinger Outdoor Friedrichshafen is “Simultaneously a platform for dialogue, a trend barometer, a face-to-face platform, a best practice market, a partial order market and a knowledge forum – in short, everything that retail needs”. In this context he also spoke of “authentic brands and retailers” that Outdoor Friedrichshafenwants to reach with its new show concept. It’s targeted as an efficient low-priced practical format as alternative to Munich. And it’s targeted mainly on the German-speaking markets of Germany, Austria and Switzerland. “This is not only the place where Messe Friedrichshafen is at home, but also the largest and most important outdoor market in Europe”, said Wellmann.

Attractive package deals

All in all the new show concept is focusing on the outdoor hardware segments of alpinism, camping, caravanning and outdoor lifestyle. Companies interested in taking part in the first Outdoor Friedrichshafen show benefit from attractive package offers. These not only include exhibition space, but also stand construction and catering. Catering areas will be set up in each respective hall. Incidentally, the halls planned for Outdoor Friedrichshafen premiere are all located in the East part of the exhibition complex (halls A6, A7, B4 and B5) including Foyer and Conference Center.
