New TranzX M17 Mid-Motor To Be Made in Taiwan

CHANG HUA, Taiwan – TranzX is changing its production locations as a result of the e-bike anti-dumping duties that came into force at the beginning of this year. It is not switching its entire production from Dongguan and Shenzhen in China to Taiwan. But the company’s newest TranzX drive system – the M17 – will be made in Taiwan. Is this a sign of more to come?

The answer to that question is, according to TranzX staff, that production will also continue to take place in China. But by the end of this year TranzX is starting the production of the new M17 drive in Taiwan. This is to take place at the TranzX parent company, JD Components in Chang Hua, Taiwan.

EN15194

Production in Taiwan will take place according to the EN15194. This EU safety standard came into force in 2017/2018 and now covers the complete electric bicycle while it also harmonizes with the Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC). This means that if an electric bike complies with EN 15194, it is presumed to be in conformity with the Machinery Directive. This should make life for e-bike producers much easier. Whereas before they had to analyze the Machinery Directive themselves for relevant requirements, they can now rely on EN 15194:2017 for compliance with the legislation. With that however, it is important to note that in most European member states compliance with EN 15194:2017 is not a legal requirement, compliance is voluntary. Compliance of electric bicycles with pedal assistance up to 25 km/h and maximum 250W with the Machinery Directive is however a legal obligation, as is compliance with the Product Safety, EMC (Electromagnatic Compatibility), Low Voltage and RoHS Directives.

Highly integrative

The new M17 mid-motor is according to TranzX “Meant to enhance designs with customizable logo and decal areas. Easy mounting position as well as reduced motor volume and wiring makes the installation of the M17 an easier task. The new M17 with its upgraded torque sensor provides a pleasant and intuitive riding experience.”

With its maximum output of 85Nm and rated power of 250/350W it’s a mid-motor for e-MTBs and other sports e-bikes. The made in Taiwan motor with integrated controller weighs 3.3 kg. and comes with an In-Tube battery.
