Fire at Royal Dutch Gazelle
DIEREN, The Netherlands – Last Saturday morning a fire destroyed the parts & accessories warehouse at Royal Dutch Gazelle. Other buildings were saved and the production was not disrupted and started as usual yesterday morning.
Gazelle GM Jaap Merkus said that lots of workers already knew through social media about the fire during the weekend. “Fortunately, our complete staff was able to go about their duties on Monday morning. That includes the people working at the P&A warehouse as we have another one located in a nearby village.”
Gazelle GM Merkus also said that a temporary hall for storing P&A will be built on the Gazelle premises while a completely new hall will be constructed as soon as possible. “That will nicely fit in our plans to modernize the factory and all other buildings on the premises.”
Monumental Gazelle facility
Gazelle’s P&A warehouse was opened in 2005. It’s now completely ruined. As it is located at quite a distance from the monumental, original Gazelle facility which stems from early 20th century, this building suffered no damage at all. What caused the fire is under investigation. Next to the P&A storage also the Gazelle company school was located in the building.
GM Merkus said that the delivery of bikes to dealers is not be affected by the fire. “On Monday morning the painting facility started as usual at 6:00 am followed one hour later by assembly and the office staff at 8:00. We do not expect big problems with the supply of parts and accessories as we have another warehouse where this is stocked. Of course we have informed all our dealers on the fire immediately.”
